Trade: Floristry

Competition: WorldSkills 2009, Calgary
Result: Bronze Medal

Qualifications:
* City & Guilds Level 2 National Certificate in Floristry

Employer: SpringBank Flowers

Ambition
I want to have my own business, teach, be published, own a floristry school and my own brand of products.

What made you get involved in competitions?
I always like to feel that I’m progressing and developing, so entering competitions was a vehicle of self development. I wanted to succeed, and competitions were a method of getting my name and my work out there, receiving feedback from the experts, learning new techniques and developing my skills - both technically and personally.

Personal achievements
Achieving 9th place in Eurofleurs August, 2008. 2nd place the Bridal Bouquet category and “surprise task” category. I was the youngest competitor there by 3 years, and achieved the highest place the UK has ever had.

- When I was 16 I was nominated by the Young Enterprise company as the most enterprising student in my borough
- Winning ‘Best Young Florist’ at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2009

Something we didn’t know about Joe
A while ago I crashed my beloved Micra at 70mph on the M6 motorway in rush hour traffic. I swerved over 3 lanes of traffic, rolled my car, skidded between two metal sign posts and ended up in an embankment full of frozen water, which then was flooding into the car. I didn’t have a scratch!
