Case Study
Hometown: Langholm, Scotland
Trade: Electrical Installation
Competition: WorldSkills 2009, Calgary
Result: Gold Medal
Qualifications:
* SVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installations
Employer: Eden Electrics
Ambition
Initially I intend to complete my apprenticeship and then gain experience in the industry and
start my own business. After this experience I would like to think I can use the extra skills and
abilities learnt and respect gained within the industry to help facilitate a move into senior
management, preferably with my current employer.
What made you get involved in competitions?
I was entered by my college as the class apprentice of the year to compete in a west of
Scotland heat. After winning that, one competition led to another and after 4 in total I find
myself here. I like to think that my pride in my work and desire to always produce work and a
service of the highest quality has helped me through the various competition stages.
What does this experience mean to you?
It means a lot. The scale of the event and the skills required to compete at this standard
highlight to me just what an honour it is to be involved. It is a tantalising thought to consider
what I am involved in and what is potentially around the corner.
Personal achievements
I am a keen thai boxer and enjoy competing at a good standard. My most recent fight was on a
card at The York Hall in London in front of approximately 1000 people.
Something we didn’t know about Richard
When I was 16, I left school and spent 3 months backpacking around New Zealand on my own.
